Delivering on Northland's Energy Transition
Maungaturoto Solar Farm

The development of the Maungaturoto Solar Farm marks a major investment in renewable energy infrastructure for the Northland region. Delivered for CHINT Energy, the 21 MW utility scale solar farm supports regional energy security while contributing to New Zealand’s transition to a lower carbon energy system.

Located on farmland near Maungaturoto, the site was chosen for its strong solar resource and close proximity to existing grid infrastructure. United Civil was appointed as main contractor, delivering the full civil and mechanical scope including earthworks, piling, foundations, electrical trenching and roading.  Construction began in September 2024 and was commissioned within 12 months.

With careful planning, the team successfully navigated the challenges of pile driving through limestone geology and trenching through a perched water table, while still meeting an accelerated construction programme.  Our team coordinated multiple specialist contractors managing the logistics of delivering and installing tens of thousands of solar panels and mounting systems.

The Maungaturoto Solar Farm is now operational, strengthening Northland’s energy resilience and demonstrating United Civil Construction’s ability to deliver utility-scale renewable projects.
